In Italian, articles (gli articoli) are words that come before nouns and tell us a lot about them! They help us identify whether a noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural, and even whether we’re talking about something specific (the book) or something more general (a book). This quick guide will help you understand the basics of Italian articles and how to use them like a pro!
1. What Are Italian Articles?
Articles are words like the or a/an in English. In Italian, each noun as a gender, it is either feminine or masculine. For example, the apple is feminine (la mela) and the bread is masculine (il pane).
The articles must match the gender and number (the plural or singular) of the noun they describe. There are two types:
- Definite Articles (gli articoli determinativi) – when you’re talking about something specific and are the equivalent of the in English. For example the green book (il libro verde) is a specific book, the green one, and not any other.
- Indefinite Articles (gli articoli indeterminativi) – when you’re talking about something general and are the equivalent of a/an in English. For example: can I have a book (posso avere un libro) refers to any book, perhaps they have a number of copies and you are asking for one, anyone.
2. Definite Articles (“The”)
Definite articles vary depending on the gender and number of the noun. Here’s a handy table:
Examples:
- Leggo Il libro verde (I read the green book)
- Lo student arriva tardi (the student arrives late)
- La casa a destra è bella (the house on the right is nice)
Definite articles can also be plural, here is a summary table
3. Indefinite Articles (“A/An”)
Indefinite articles work similarly but only for singular nouns:
Examples:
- Compro un libro e uno zaino (I buy a book and a backpack).
- La mia amica ha una casa bella (My friend has a beautiful house).
