When to use IN or A: 6 Rules

Learning Italian prepositions can be tricky, especially when it comes to using them with the verb andare (to go). Should you say andare a or andare in? Let’s break down these guidelines, so you’ll always know which one to use!

Watch the video and then consolidate by reading the blog and to the practice exercises at the end of this page:

1. Use “a” with Cities

When you want to say you’re going to a city, always use “a”.

  • Vado a Roma. (I’m going to Rome.)
  • Andiamo a Milano. (We’re going to Milan.)
  • Siano andati a Torino. (We went to Torino.)

2. Use “in” with Countries and Regions

If you’re talking about going to a country or a region, use “in”.

  • Vado in Italia. (I’m going to Italy.)
  • Andiamo in Toscana. (We’re going to Tuscany.)
  • Vado in Francia. (I’m going to France.)

3. Use “in” with Most Buildings

Generally, when you go to a building or place of work, use “in”:

  • Vado in ufficio. (I’m going to the office.)
  • Vado in biblioteca. (I’m going to the library.)
  • Vado in banca. (I’m going to the bank.)
  • Vado in posta. (I’m going to the post office.)
  • Vado in palestra. (I’m going to the gym.)
  • Vado in fabbrica. (I’m going to the factory.)

Exceptions:

There are a few important exceptions, where you use “a” instead of “in”:

  • a casaVado a casa. (I’m going home.)
  • a scuolaVado a scuola. (I’m going to school.)

4. Use “in” for the House and its parts

When you’re going to a specific room or area in the house, use “in”:

  • Vado in cucina. (I’m going to the kitchen.)
  • Vado in camera. (I’m going to the bedroom.)
  • Vado in bagno. (I’m going to the bathroom)
  • Vado in soffitta. (I’m going to the attic.)
  • Vado in cantina. (I’m going to the cellar.)

5. Use “a” with Events

If you’re going to an event, use “a”:

  • Vado a un concerto. (I’m going to a concert.)
  • Vado a lezione. (I’m going to class.)
  • Vado a un matrimonio. (I’m going to a wedding.)
  • Vado a una riunione. (I’m going to a meeting.)
  • Vado a un funerale. (I’m going to a funeral.)

In order to make it easier for you to memorise these, consider the theatre and the cinema as shows (events) rather than buildings.

  • Vado al cinema. (I’m going to the cinema)
  • Vado a Teatro. I’m going to the theatre.)

6. Transportation Methods (man-made vehicles)

With means of transport, use “in” for most vehicles:

  • Vado in macchina. (I go by car.)
  • Vado in treno. (I go by train.)
  • Vado in autobus. (I go by bus.)
  • Vado in bicicletta. (I go by bicycle.)
  • Vado in aereo. (I go by plane.)
  • Vado in taxi. (I go by taxi.)

But use a with horse (vado a cavallo) or if on foot (vado a piedi)
