How structured learning accelerates your Italian
In today’s world, learning a language has never been easier—or so it seems. There are podcasts, YouTube videos, apps, books, and endless free resources at our fingertips. And while all of these are helpful, I want to share something that many learners only realise later: working on your own will only get you so far.
If you want to make real progress—especially when it comes to speaking accurately and confidently—structured teaching is essential. I know this from personal experience…

My own story as a language learner
Let me take you back around twenty years. I had already been living in London for some time, I was enrolled in a course, and, when ready, I took the C1 English exam. I passed, and I thought I’d reached a level where I could simply carry on learning through daily life. After all, I was immersed in English, I’d done a Master’s degree in the language, and I was working and building my career. I stopped going to classes and thought: “That’s enough.”
Fast forward to today, and I’ve decided I’d like to prepare for the Cambridge English C2 exam. But something surprised me: I’m noticing gaps I didn’t expect to find. Sentence structure, certain expressions, and finer points of grammar still trip me up. And it’s not because I haven’t been using the language—it’s because I haven’t been studying it in a structured way.
Had I continued with regular classes or worked consistently with a teacher, I would have made much more progress in far less time. If that’s true at an advanced level, imagine how much more it matters for beginners and intermediates!

Why self-study alone isn’t enough
It’s tempting to think that simply surrounding yourself with the language is enough. But the truth is:
- You don’t get feedback when you make mistakes.
- You often avoid the tricky areas—subconsciously or not—because they’re hard to face alone.
- You might reinforce errors without even realising it.
- Passive exposure (like reading and listening) doesn’t build speaking confidence or precision.
You are learning when you read a book or watch a video—but you’re not necessarily improving in the ways that matter for active communication.
Let me give you a real example: by living in London and immersing myself in English through listening and reading for many years, I improved my reading and listening skills, but I didn’t make the progress I wanted in speaking or mastering tricky grammar structures.
How structured teaching speeds things up
When you follow a structured course or work with a qualified teacher, several things change:
- You’re guided through grammar and vocabulary that build on each other.
- You get feedback and corrections that help you stop repeating mistakes.
- You’re challenged to speak, to write, and to use the language actively.
- You get support, encouragement, and a sense of direction.
This combination of input + practice + feedback is what accelerates your progress.

What I’ve learned—and what I’d do differently
Looking back, I now realise how valuable continued, structured learning would have been. It’s not that I didn’t learn anything on my own—it’s that I could have learned more, and faster, with the right guidance.
Language learning never really ends. Even now, as an experienced teacher, I see how much I still have to learn—and how much easier that process becomes when it’s guided and intentional.
Final thoughts
If you’re learning Italian (or any language), don’t fall into the trap of thinking self-study is enough. Yes, you’ll make progress, but it will take far longer than it needs to.
I passed my C2 exam not by studying alone, but by enrolling in a course where I received personalized feedback. Through this process, I discovered grammar structures I didn’t even know existed and improved significantly based on targeted guidance.
Investing in structured learning isn’t just about passing exams—it’s about gaining confidence, accuracy, and the joy of expressing yourself freely.
So, ask yourself: what’s the fastest way to get where I want to be? Chances are, it starts with a class.
